The Friends of the Montreal Botanical Garden are seeking a PHILANTHROPY ADVISOR for a full-time position (approximately 28 hours per week).

Description

  • Under the supervision of the Executive Director and within a multidisciplinary team, the position holder designs, implements, and monitors a financing plan and innovative, sustainable fundraising strategies. The person is responsible for developing or strengthening relationships with financial partners and writing grant applications. They are also tasked with managing tree adoptions at the Botanical Garden.

  • Philanthropy Responsibilities
  • Contribute to the diversification of funding sources: sponsorships, donations, commemorative donations, fund creation, grants, and other financial aid
  • Develop an annual philanthropic action plan, including the development and implementation of various strategies according to donor profiles and financial objectives
  • Set performance goals for annual activities, conduct annual process reviews, and ensure continuous improvement
  • Develop and oversee the execution of major fundraising campaigns (writing, solicitation, representation)
  • Ensure the implementation or extension of negotiated agreements, their compliance, and the maintenance of good relations with partners
  • Periodically evaluate the performance of fundraising activities and ensure the effectiveness of monitoring systems
  • Implement a recognition plan and coordinate the management and communication of received donations (correspondence, calls, issuance of tax receipts, thank-yous, etc.)
  • Ensure compliance with laws and regulations regarding donations, commemorative donations, and fund creation, including the regulations of the Canada Revenue Agency
  • Conduct strategic monitoring to identify partnership opportunities and follow philanthropy trends in terms of approaches and potential partner identification
  • Identify potential grant opportunities from the government, philanthropic organizations, private companies, etc.
  • Write complete and convincing grant proposals that meet the specific requirements and criteria of each funder
  • Collaborate with the Communications Advisor to develop solicitation, retention, and advertising materials (tree adoptions, donations, and sponsorships…)
  • Organize, in collaboration with colleagues, the Board of Directors, and management, the activities for the 50th anniversary of Les Amis du Jardin botanique de Montréal in 2025
  • Plan and manage any other fundraising events or activities
  • Act as a consultant to the management team

Tree Adoption Responsibilities

  • Respond to inquiries and welcome individuals, members, and non-members, who seek information or wish to adopt a tree in the Botanical Garden
  • Provide all necessary documentation to support them in choosing the location and type of tree to adopt
  • Accompany individuals in the outdoor gardens as needed to help them find the ideal tree(s) that meet their needs
  • Collaborate with the Botanical Garden horticulture teams (botanist/assistant botanists) to obtain necessary certifications and information on tree health and adoption identification
  • Ensure the financial follow-up of each request and obtain the necessary authorizations from the organization's management as well as from the Garden Conservator
  • Perform adoption identifications in the outdoor gardens
  • Review and draft policies and documents related to tree adoptions
  • Plan approaches to optimize tree adoptions

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Hold a university degree in administration, finance, or a certificate in philanthropy. Any combination of relevant education and experience will be considered
  • 3 to 4 years of experience related to the role, especially in soliciting corporate and individual donations and sponsorship requests
  • Good knowledge of philanthropic culture in Quebec, particularly in the Montreal context
  • Leadership, autonomy, rigor
  • Ability to work in an event-driven context and meet tight deadlines
  • Empathy, sensitivity, and strong interpersonal and teamwork skills
  • Ability to develop and maintain a network of partners
  • Understanding and ease with various databases, software, and donation platforms
  • Proficiency in both French and English, both spoken and written

  • Commitment to and desire to promote the mission of Les Amis du Jardin botanique de Montréal
  • Experience or strong interest in cultural and/or scientific environments and the specificities related to non-profit organizations

  • Selection process: Selection interview and written test related to the job functions
  • Workplace: 4101 Sherbrooke Street East, Montreal, H1X 2B2, with telework possibilities
  • Compensation: Based on skills, experience, and work schedule
  • Benefits: Collective RRSP, with employer contribution, after 6 months of service
  • Start date: Ideally August 2024
