The Friends of the Montreal Botanical Garden are seeking a PHILANTHROPY ADVISOR for a full-time position (approximately 28 hours per week).

To be a Philanthropy Advisor at Les Amis du Jardin botanique de Montréal means...

  • Initiating and coordinating innovative projects and successful fundraising events;
  • Accessing spaces and events at the Botanical Garden and Espace pour la vie museums;
  • Enjoying lemon cakes often, and brownies occasionally.

Description

Under the supervision of the General Manager, and as part of a multidisciplinary team, the incumbent designs, implements, and monitors a financing plan and sustainable fundraising strategies. They are responsible for developing or strengthening relationships with financial partners and writing grant applications. They are also tasked with managing tree adoptions at the Botanical Garden.

Responsibilities - Philanthropy Focus

  • Contribute to diversifying funding sources: sponsorships, donations, memorial gifts, fund creation, grants, and any other financial assistance;
  • Develop an annual philanthropic action plan, including the development and implementation of various strategies according to donor profiles and financial goals;
  • Determine performance targets for annual activities, conduct annual process reviews, and ensure continuous improvement;
  • Develop and supervise the implementation of major fundraising campaign activities (drafting, solicitation, representation);
  • Ensure the realization or extension of negotiated agreements, their compliance, and maintaining good relations with partners;
  • Periodically evaluate the performance of fundraising activities and ensure the effectiveness of tracking systems;
  • Implement the recognition plan and coordinate the management and communication related to received donations (correspondence, calls, issuing tax receipts, acknowledgments, etc.);
  • Ensure compliance with laws and regulations regarding donations, memorial donations, fund creation, including regulations from the Canada Revenue Agency;
  • Conduct strategic monitoring to identify partnership opportunities and follow philanthropy trends in terms of approaches and identification of potential partners;
  • Identify potential grant opportunities from government, philanthropic organizations, private companies, etc.;
  • Write comprehensive and compelling grant proposals that meet the specific requirements and criteria of each funding body;
  • Develop solicitation and retention materials in collaboration with the communications advisor (tree adoptions, donations, sponsorships, etc.);
  • Organize, in collaboration with colleagues, the Board of Directors, and management, the activities of the 50th anniversary of Les Amis du Jardin botanique de Montréal in 2025;
  • Plan and manage any other fundraising events or activities; Serve as an expert advisor to management.

Responsibilities - Tree Adoption Focus

  • Respond to inquiries and welcome individuals, members, and non-members, who wish to obtain information or adopt a tree from the Botanical Garden;
  • Provide all necessary documentation to support them in their choice of location and tree species to adopt;
  • Accompany, if necessary, individuals in the outdoor Gardens to help them find the ideal tree or trees that meet their needs;
  • Collaborate with members of the Botanical Garden's horticulture teams (botanist/assistant botanists) to obtain certifications and information on tree health and identification of adoptions;
  • Ensure financial follow-up for each request and obtain necessary approvals from the organization's management, as well as from the Garden's Curator;
  • Perform adoption identifications in outdoor gardens;
  • Review and draft policies and documents related to tree adoptions; Plan approaches to optimize tree adoptions.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Hold a university degree in administration, finance, or a certificate in philanthropy. Any combination of relevant education and experience will be considered;
  • 3 to 4 years of experience related to the mandate, particularly in soliciting corporate and individual donations, and sponsorship requests;
  • Good knowledge of philanthropic culture in Quebec, especially in the Montreal context;
  • Leadership, autonomy, rigor; Ability to work in an event context and meet tight deadlines;
  • Empathy, sensitivity, and strong interpersonal skills for teamwork;
  • Ease in developing and maintaining a network of partners;
  • Understanding and proficiency with various databases, software, and donation platforms;
  • Fluency in French and English, both orally and in writing.

  • Knowledge of the Botanical Garden's spaces or a strong interest in the Botanical Garden; Commitment to and desire to promote Les Amis du Jardin botanique de Montréal's mission;
  • Experience or strong interest in cultural and/or scientific environments and the specificities related to non-profit organizations.

Other Information

  • Selection process: selection interview and written test related to the functions of the position.
  • Workplace: 4101, Rue Sherbrooke Est, Montreal, H1X 2B2, with telecommuting opportunities.
  • Salary: according to skills, experience, and work schedule.
  • Benefits: group RRSP, with employer contribution, after 6 months of service.
  • Start date: Ideally, mid-May 2024.
